This article began life as an archive of travel photos.  At some point, I added links to Vine series which I follow, and later, it morphed again to include links on a variety of non-political topics.

The end result is a haphazard list of excellent articles and threads, which you won't find on the front page of Newsvine.  However, it is in no way comprehensive, because its purpose kept changing.

After the creation of Supervine, I stopped linking articles in this document, so be sure to check out the Supervine Group for more excellent reads.

If something is not listed, and you know where it is, please feel free to link it in the comment section.

Thank you etva for the inclusion of Dirty Cops.

I had no idea it would impact those outside of newsvine like it did.

It ruffled some feathers in the ALJ System that I never expected to ruffle!

Once they noticed the citizens were actually watching an esoteric process, hidden from everyday scrutiny, it opened some eyes at U S Commerce, and contributed to the abolition of utilizing the system in prosecuting civil cases against commercial fishermen that are the oldest small business builders in America.

From my perspective, it was not so much the article, but the real impact was generated by the comments of our newsvine community.

It wasn't some unknown author (loose term) that accomplished that.

It was the mesage from real people that were informed, and in turn, voiced some deserved outrage at our Government, and the government employees that could bully, shake down, and condemn our fellow citizens, in one tidy little kangaroo court sytem.

The story continues!

Uh oh! It wouldn't have anything to do with categorizing old NVP posts, would it? LOL!

This started out as such a project, but it was much more difficult than I expected. I was going to have a section on birds, insects, sunsets, etc, but so often, the posts are mixed, and I couldn't decide what category they went in.

Actually, I had much of JS's posts listed as sunsets, and then stopped posting to that category. I need to add her as Hawaii Travel Photos.

I also discovered that very few people are consistent with their tags:)

I also discovered that very few people are consistent with their tags:)

We need to work on that, or I guess I do. oldfogey mentioned (#4) NVP should be providers of stock photography for use in articles written for Newsvine. This is actually (for anyone unaware) the purpose of which the group was founded. Consistent tagging would be extremely(!!!!) important for it to be successful.

Uh oh! It wouldn't have anything to do with categorizing old NVP posts, would it? LOL!

Well, maybe. At the Greenhouse Showcase (now known as The Guidepost) we were writing monthly articles highlighting the high-points. They serve as a sort of advertisement, 'hey we're here and still active'. 'Summary' and 'highlights' articles for NVP have been mentioned outside the group before.

It's fun to search through 'the archives'. I've sifted through the NVP articles (all of them!) as recently as April - it took an entire afternoon of, what some might call, careless browsing. At the rate content has been coming in, it's going to take a lot longer, but the fact is, we shouldn't have to even think about creating a group directory. If someone is so inclined to search through the content, all they need do is visit our tag cloud... training is needed, I suppose, because jamming a knife into your eye will be easier than asking folks to add the proper tags and sorting through 2500+ articles.

Thanks for the link, Ben. I hadn't seen that, but I'll try to get over and leave a comment, after I've had more coffee and can fully open my eyes. I'll probably go off on a rant - LOL:)

I didn't realize the Flicker upload was no longer working. I wouldn't think that it would be that difficult for NV to put it back. After all, they did say they were trying to provide useful tools for everyone. And I still really like the idea of a photo pool. I would use it, as well as add to it.

I'd also love to see more joint articles (writers and photographers.) Physicist retired wrote an outstanding article on the Battle of Bull Run (see history above) and I frequently visit the park and have photos. I was planning on doing an article, but he got there first and did a much better job than I would have. I'm still going to post the photos, and he said I could link and quote from his article, which didn't get many views for some strange reason.

Scar_Tissue is another who writes the most incredible history articles, but uses stock photos. We have enough travellers in this group, that we should be able to provide photos for her.

Another way to encourage organization would be to add more photo days - such as Tuesday Travel or Wednesday Wildlife.

I like the idea of summary articles -- or archive articles as I call them -- the kind that Dowser did with her articles - dividing them into category.

As for tags, yeah (sigh) it would be a real challenge to implement. Some people use 20 or more tags; I had too few tags, and grouped everything as country-life. Then I went back in and started adding tags (butterflies, flowers, fields, etc.)

Still, I think NVP is up for the challenge. You keep us going Ben, and challenge us to be more than we are. That's a real talent!

Another way to encourage organization would be to add more photo days - such as Tuesday Travel or Wednesday Wildlife.

I was thinking about adding Kyp's 'Tasty Tuesday' feature, just haven't talked to him about it yet. It'd be nice to have a to-do box that popped up each time I logged on Newsvine...

I know that adding feature days is a good way to solicit content, as evidenced by Good News Wednesday and foto-friday, but I'm a little bit afraid that if we have too many, it'll become... hokey.

Still, I think NVP is up for the challenge. You keep us going Ben, and challenge us to be more than we are. That's a real talent!

There have been a lot of times where I've felt like all this group administration was pointless and not worth the time, despite the RAV, etc. I don't remember the last time this thought came across, but since we've been meeting, etc, it hasn't really crossed my mind. It is definitely 'I push you, you push me, I push back, you push back, etc, etc, etc, etc'... thing.

Ben, I've been doing the Cat Movie Classics-- pictures of the cats, posed as movie advertisements or movie posters. It is much like what we talked about before, but with the cats as people.

Anyway, I haven't been posting them to Newsvine Photographers, because I use elements of other pictures that I haven't taken myself. It is really hard to get a decent picture of an F14 here in Louisville... Anyway, I've been posting a few to Photovine. They are a lot of work, but it has been fun... Is it OK to use Photovine like that?

And, I did make a video about what it takes to make these pictures-- it is kind of funny. Since that is all original, may I post that to Newsvine Photographers?

Thanks for your help, dear Ben!

AR, I just left your column and those are great photos - perfect for NVP. I forgot to mention, it is possible to schedule publication for a particular day, though I don't know how to do it. Also, you can post to NVP on any day, and just leave out the Foto-Friday or Weekend Exposure Tags. There's nothing that says you must post on those days only.

At any rate, your pictures were beautiful - well, the Armadillo may not be beautiful -- perhaps fascinating is a better word. *GRINS*

I have tomorrow's reminder article for the vinemeet already done... if I could do them for the remainder of the year, I'd be in good shape.... not counting on that tho.

So, I'm in EST, and that is 1:00 pm my time? Egads, I do this all the time, why can't I get this right? Our camper is in CST and we're in EST...

Thanks very much! Maybe I can make that one!

Ha Ha! The history section is short, because I didn't want you to get side-tracked from your writing, and most of the links, you've already seen - LOL:)

      [etva mumbles under her breath]

(I so hope ST has already read Synth's Crypto-History Series....)

Not sure how I missed this one but, I'm glad I came across it. Amazing list and thanks. There is so much on NV that this list will be very helpful. :)

Thanks Mrs. D! I hope it has a category that interests you. I probably need to branch out a bit, but these are the types of things I enjoy:)

I did find some categories that interest me. One, that I would like to check out first is the "History" category. I have read rottlady, Dowser and keeping up with KO's series but, I have not seen the other articles. I will most difinitely check those out. Have you read Bitey's series she did? If not, I think you will enjoy her sci-fi story... :)

I did read Bitey's works -- at least, I don't think I missed any. There are several in the fiction section above.

If you are at all interested in the Civil War, Physicist Retired is going to be doing some articles during the anniversary presentations, from various battlefields. The first one is linked above (Battle of Bull Run.) He has a great writing style - information and emotion.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy some of the article:)

dang. You posted this during one of my "hermit" phases, so I missed it, but I'm going to leave a couple of belated comments anyway....

This is a stroke of genius, to archive articles altogether like this. Makes things a whole lot easier for us folks who are too self-indulgent and/or lazy to scroll through 2000+ articles on our tracker to find the good stuff. I also appreciate that you listed a lot of older stuff which I missed the first time around.

And finally....I'm truly surprised, but honored to see my "Primal" series made your list. I know the subject matter is not a "mass appeal" topic and it was only meant to be read by a handful of people who are interested in discussing that stuff.....the fact that you, etva, thought enough of it to include it here means a lot me, truly.

Thanks for doing this, etva. I guess i owe you a cookie now :-)

I'm glad you like it, Believer.

One of my few complaints about Newsvine, is how difficult it is to find the excellent non-political articles. Obviously, this is based on my personal preferences, and there are a few political articles here, that I thought really made a statement and supported the view point in a clear and concise manner, but I also tried to choose articles and series that would have mass appeal, or would simply offer an alternative to politics.

I didn't really know what kind of category Primal should be in, but I definitely think it's well worth reading - thought provoking and excellent emotional imagery. It would be on any list I created:)

You're quite welcome CT. Actually, you just reminded me to add your geography articles. I do still add to the archive, but I also forget when I'm short on time. LOL:) Unfortunately, many of the excellent and timeless articles get lost, so my hope was to bring them back to light.
