This isn't a new photo, but it's my all-time favorite for simplicity.

Thanks, Jobs! Considering the simplicity, this one WAS work, and the mystery is how it came out in focus, because we were laughing like loons. I was leaning out of the boat from the waist up, with 2 of my friends holding me by the belt, and my kids sitting on my legs. Everyone else, was on the other side of the Jon Boat, trying to keep it from flipping over. *grins*

That does seem like a lot of work, bordering on the dangerous :)

I got a photo of a feather floating on water last year (it's on my column) but that was just by standing on a bridge and waiting for the feather to float by. Not a bit of danger.

As for the focus, one thing I've found useful in such situations is to shoot in rapid burst mode with 3-5 frames per second while the camera is moving (especially when panning).

Thanks for the tip.

We were at a shallow point in the river, so there was no real danger, plus we all had life vests. Having said that, I'd love something other than a stock lens, so I wouldn't have to get so close - LOL:)

Feathers have a beauty unmatched by anything else. On a bird, they perform a function. Individually, they only exhibit their singular beauty.

Very nice capture, Evta.

I was looking at the flowing lines of each line of the delicate feather structure. That's how I look at things most times now. I see the flow of line as a part of the whole web thesis in my own work.

Besides, a feather on water is never stationary for long. It is a lure that is alluring. lol

I love it. I love the reflection.

What appears simplistic actually required millions of years to evolve.

It's interesting to note that science is beginning to think, based on fossilized evidence, that feathers evolved for warmth, not flight.

Guardian Angel Feather.

A feather from an Angel,
Is one we rarely see.
But this one is quite different,
And as special as can be.

This feather is a reminder,
Of a special person's love....
Who is now your Guardian Angel,
Watching & protecting from above.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

BY EMILY DICKINSON

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Lovely poems, Penn! Here's my contribution:

Feather Philosophy

A feather can be seen; Soaring through the skies;

Once it was an eagle; Directed by the eyes.

A feather can be seen; Riding on the breeze;

Once it was a seagull; Fishing from the seas.

A feather can be seen; Blowing through the farm;

Once it was a rooster; Crowing an alarm.

A feather can be seen; Drifting through the air;

Once it had purpose; Now it doesn’t care.

A feather can be seen' In the sky or on the ground;

It’s meaning changes often; From simple to profound.

EDIT: What the hell happened to my formatting! GRRRRR!

Floating with the Wind

Sitting here, wasting time
Thinking about what I left behind.
The past spinning in my head
Wondering where I have been lead.
I'm floating with the wind.

There are many places I'd rather be-
Lost in love or completely free.
But it's more the same day to day.
I'm floating with the wind.

There comes a time in a person's life
When we must decide to do or die.
Now is the time to make a choice
The perfect time to raise our voice.
To take control of our life.

But I'm:

Sitting here, wasting time
Thinking about what I left behind.
The past spinning in my head
Wondering where I have been lead.
I'm floating with the wind.

Having some life to go
What will happen? I sure don't know.
But it's more the same day to day.
I'm floating with the wind.

There comes a time in a person's life
When we must decide to do or die.
Now is the time to make a choice
The perfect time to raise our voice.
To take control of our life.

But I'm:

Lost inside, relaxed and slow
Never knowing where to go.
The past spinning in my head
Wondering where I have been lead.
I'm floating with the wind.

There are many things I'd rather be
A change of life is right for me
But I'm.....
Floating with the wind.

I'll throw in my 2 cents

A lonely feather can not fly

You must have friends to take to the sky.

Listen to the birds and heed their congregating call.

United we stand, Divided we fall.

We must be more like a feather and stick together.
