My camera just can't do justice to moon shots, but this was a huge, orange moon; the best I could do, using a fence post to balance the camera. LOL:)

Beautiful shots etva! The colors of the sunsets look like they could have been painted. The moon is a challenge for me too, I just can't seem to get it :)

Thanks Dare! Just getting a round shape is a challenge for me, but I really loved the color of this one. I didn't adjust the color at all, though to be honest, the moon seemed even oranger for a brief moment in time. By the time I got home, it was its usual color.

A. Macarthur

The earth rotates at hundreds of miles per hour (different at different latitudes, but in general ... 25000miles/23 hours 56 minutes) and unless you can shoot the moon at near full frame and at a fast shutter speed, there will be blur. Don't fret, etva, it's not you ...

If you don't have a tripod, use a beanbag and find a stable object to sit it on with your camera sitting on the beanbag. That will allow you some angle manipulation with stability.

But ... it won't stop the earth's rotation ...

Some EXPENSIVE tripods have motor mounts with altitude/azimuth settings ... the tripod head and camera rotate to pan the moon and reduce the blur.

FYI.

Hi A. Mac! What a great suggestion! I'll be looking for a little beanbag pillow to add to my camera case. I was actually on the road when I took this particular shot, and just pulled off on a hill. I tried using a fence post, but it's slanted, so while it did give some support, it didn't really help with wobble. A beanbag might have made a huge difference!

As long as there's something to set it on, a beanbag can be better than a tripod, because sometimes it can be hard to set up a tripod on some surfaces (a problem I had holding my camera still when I took a night shot from a bridge's railing).

Wow, Etva! When I looked at your beautiful photos my heart almost cried. Here in China, at least in central China where I live, there simply are no beautiful sunsets, and even clouds are rare to see. The colours just sort of disappear into the pollution when the sun nears the horizon.

So sorry I'm late for these! I'm loving your sunsets, some of these should be blown up and mounted on the wall.

Another suggestion on the moon shots, try using the timer, then you won't be moving the camera as it fires. I apologize if it was mentioned before, I haven't read all the comments yet.... (my bad). *sheepish grin*

Thanks Rottlady!

I don't know if I have a timer, nor how to use it. But even so, I probably wouldn't have taken the time. I could barely see what I was doing, and had to keep going to the headlights to change the setting on my camera. I tried auto and nighttime, but the auto did much better.

I think Rottlady was speaking of the timer that's built into the camera. The kind where you set it and then run around and get in the picture itself, because it is a delay mechanism. You push the button to take a picture, and it delays the shutter by around 10 seconds. That way you're not holding the camera so the camera would be more steady once it's on a tripod or beanbag. Or did you already know that?

Hi ET,

Lovely sunsets!

They are all quite nice exactly as they are, but if I may, I'd like to offer some thoughts about what I would do with these images. Everyone has their own purpose and objectives in photography, I am finding myself trying to find/create imagery that is unique in some way... that is why my photo offerings have been kind of sparse of late. Sooooo... I want you to understand that I am not trying to drive you to do anything in particular... nor am I suggesting that there is anything wrong with these images... I am only offering MY perspective... That said, here are my thoughts...

Almost all of these, especially image number one offer cropping opportunities... I would be inclined to crop them in such a way that it might not be immediately obvious that they were sunsets. The colors are wonderful... the way they blend is sublime (as is often the case with sunsets)... In image number one, cropping it so that nothing except the sky was visible might turn it into a very nice abstract painting.

One last thought... Moon shots are VERY difficult!!! I tried to get the sliver moon just yesterday... I am learning that it simply cannot be done without going into 100% manual mode. Your camera appears to have made it possible by using a high ISO setting... That is most obvious in the last image... I am guessing that is happening because you have your camera set to use auto-ISO... I was so dissatisfied with the results of auto-ISO on my camera that I now keep it locked at ISO 200 and use other settings to get the exposure I want.

As I said, they are lovely photos! I hope you don't mind that I offered a few more thoughts...

Mal would never want to offend his ET friend.

I very much appreciate your comment and thoughts, Mal.

I didn't do much of anything to these shots, though I did try to improve the focus on the moon shots - not very successfully - LOL:) I'll definitely play around with them when I have some time. I also have some others from that night, which are mostly sky, and might do even better as a crop.

I believe my ISO is currently at 400 -- I managed to get it changed at one of our virtual meetings, but it never even occurred to me to try and change it, when I took these, since I wasn't stopped in a safe location. It was an impulse shot! LOL:) I need to get into the habit of changing my settings, so I can do it quickly, off the cuff.

I had planned to present you with my moon shots at a meeting and see what you'd advise:)

ISO 400 is not too bad... You should be able to stick with that if you like the results... I was just guessing you might be set on auto-ISO since most of the shots weren't grainy at all, but the moon shots (especially the last one) were a bit grainy. I use ISO 200... which makes some of the low light shots very challenging... But I have discovered that it is much easier to "revive" an underexposed image than a grainy image... that is why I go for the lowest ISO I can set.
