In last night's virtual vine meet, we discussed (and practised) noise reduction in photos. I fully intended to edit these and reduce the noise, but alas, I failed. I couldn't get any noise reduction in PSE, and I have no idea why. Thus, I'm hoping we can address the issue again in a future meet, so I can figure out how to make the tool work in PSE:)

Noise? The only noise I could detect was the dust on my screen. Nothing there that needs fixing and you know the saying - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

LOL! Thanks Mongo. I have trouble recognizing noise, but I can definitely see the results in photos that have noise reduction. They look so much clearer -- well, at least they do on Fletch's sunsets:)

2 cents coming up :o) NR is kind of a personal thing, there is a give and take to it. If a big open sky appears blotchy a little NR will blend that smooth, but on the other hand like your pictures above, too much NR and you will loose the detail in the smallest twigs on the trees. If I use NR, I keep my eye on the fine detail I want to keep and use that as a judge on what is too much.

Where noise really starts to show up is in enlargements and tends to disappear in reductions.

Those are beautiful pictures Etva :o)

Thanks Lebowsky. I agree that NR is a matter of taste. Mostly, I can't see the subtle changes, but I recognize that others can. Where I really would like to use NR is in some of my older scanned photos, to see if it helps with the grainy look.

That would be an excellent place to experiment with it. I saw the comment suggesting the toggling the preview button on and off to show the change, that is a great way to see the amount of change quickly, it really makes the change apparent.

Some thing that happens to me sometimes is that I will start to make changes and nothing happens, I then find out that I did not have the preview engaged or on. Do that enough times and you learn to check that first. :o)

Well, I appeared to have preview on, but I'm sure whatever I was or wasn't doing was equally as silly -- kind of like hitting the delete key to activate a new background color. [etva rolling her eyes]

I just keep saying, These buttons are my friends over and over lol Using and experimenting is really necessary just to become familiar with any software. With images part of that is learning what you are looking at, in order to determine how to correct it. It is a process that gets easier the more you do, but you never stop learning.

There are a number ways to reduce noise, but, depending on a number of factors ... ISO/ASA and long exposures being the biggest noise contributors, not all noise reductions yield clean finished images.

Often the noise is most prominent in the darkest areas of an image; when that's the case, select a black area with the magic wand tool and increase the contrast or darken the shadows ... that will sometimes leave a clean, deep black result without degrading the colors.

Try it ... it may not be a perfect solution, but it might make a difference.

Thanks Fletch! #5 is my favorite also.

I did find the Noise Reduction tool, but I couldn't make it function; that is, there was no change at all, even if I moved all the dials to either extreme. I wasn't using the layer function (I don't think) and I tried selecting all, but nothing worked. *sigh* I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm doing wrong, or like has happened before, it will work perfectly, with NVP is there to help me - LOL:)

Ok, the adjustments for Noise Reduction in PS9 are working but the changes are very subtle to see. In Paintshop the range scale is from 1 to 100, the PS9 range is from 1 to 10. I had to push the slider all the way to 10 to see any difference in Sky Areas but the changes to water areas were too much.

Look for a Preview button in the NR box and click it and unclick it after making adjustments and you will be able to see a before and after.

Ah ha! That makes sense. I hadn't noticed the missing 0 in my program settings. I did push it to the extreme, but I'm blind like a bat, and couldn't see any difference. I'll have to try it on our next meet, and you tell me if you can see a difference -- you have eagle eyes! *grins*

PS: I did click and unclick the preview and still couldn't see a change. [etva's shoulders slump] I must be blinder than I thought -- not good for a wanna-be photographer:(

Not really I just picked one of my photos I knew had noise and zoomed in on those areas to compare. And as I said the effects in PS9 subtle compared to Paintshop, except in the water areas. In the water I did not like how it rendered it there.

I'm glad you like the bird photo. I'm afraid they are out of focus, but I had tears in my already blind eyes (from the wind; not the beauty - LOL) and couldn't really see what I was focusing on. *grins*

Whoa! These are breathtaking! I love the first one with the trees bending in the wind. But I think #5 is my favorite; there's something about the balance between the clouds in the sky and the silhouettes of the trees that really appeals to me in that one.

Thanks Holly! I took 100 shots that night, and had difficulty culling the photos down to these. I think what appeals in #5 is the way the clouds behind the trees angle down behind the horizon on the diagonal, leading the eye from the bottom right line of thirds, towards the left and bottom of the photo. (Yeah, that discription is easy to understand - LOL & Sarc) Rephrase: It think it's the diagonal leading lines that appeal to our senses. :-)

# 6 is similar, but the photo isn't thirded as well, since I wanted the field portion as well.

I like the simple, graphic and back-lit composition of the trees and ridge-tops...and of course the small and subtle flight of birds. That adds a lot, but you have to look for it. Your eyes can't be all that bad if you noticed the birds etva. Were any of these cropped?

Uhm, [etva looks around to see if Mal's paying attention] I meant to crop them, really I did, but I was running late for Foto-Friday, so the only one I got around to cropping was the bird photo - trying to bring them in closer. I had promised to work on my rule of thirds cropping, but I'm late as usual:)

I still tend to take alot of pictures from different perspectives and then choose the ones that worked out best. I forget that I know how to crop now, which is a relatively new skill for me.

The birds were actually very noticeable because they were in motion, but they seem far away in the photo. :-)

Heh... know that feeling far too well:-)

Coolness. Glad to hear of your growing skills. In the ancient days of yore, when Dubbya was a young and 'purist' camera-punk, he disbelieved in cropping and printed all his photos full-frame. It's a good exercise, forcing a person to really work the shot, and not rely on cropping, [which can reduce the quality of the photo if you go too far with it]. But eventually Dub realized that when used judiciously, cropping was a pretty darned important part of the skill-set of any photographer and he'd better get with the program and stop throwing out salvageable photos:-) He now crops with wild abandon.

these photos are fine as they are presently , areas of concern will arise if you enlarge them or play to far with gamma adjustments in certain programs.Great settings, also if I am right more noise would appear with a greater Iso . This I would review and also it's relationship with shutter speed.Love the pics.
