Photo-Challenge: Etva's Best of 2011

Fri Jan 6, 2012 7:44 AM EST
not-news, newsvine-photographers, photo-challenge, best-of-2011
By etva

11) "Rolling Hills of the Piedmont" © 2011 by etva
It's home. Enough said.

10) "Swallowtail Butterfly" © 2011 by etva
We saw a huge decrease in the number of butterflies in our area this summer, but this one kindly posed for photos.

9) "Bumblebee" © 2011 by etva
I wasn't the only one who liked the Blue Mist Spirea. This fellow helped me improve my macro skills.

8) "Blue Mist Spirea" © 2011 by etva
I spent a huge portion of my summer trying to capture the ethereal beauty of Blue Mist Spirea blooms. This was the image I liked best.

7) "Chicory" © 2011 by etva
I liked the clarity and detail of this image. It took a few shots to get both the flower and the bee in focus.

6) "Morning Glory" © 2011 by etva
The muted colors and background patterns of this photo leave me feeling calm, peaceful and content.

5) "Night Magnolia" © 2011 by etva
I liked the low key tones combined with the rain drops -- moody, but still beautiful.

4) "Cicada Butt" © 2011 by etva
Perspective, creativity, symbolism, orginality... OK, I just like the photo:)

3) "Flight" © 2011 by etva
Perspective was the goal; timing was the problem. Eventually the turkey vulture cooperated.

2) "Saucer Magnolia" © 2011 by etva
This image came from a blurry photo, which I planned to delete. It taught me to always play with my pictures to see what can be created.

1) "Not a Creature was Stirring" © 2011 by etva
My favorite photo of the year took me the longest to achieve, since I'm still learning to use my camera settings. I wanted shimmery lights with the background in focus. It took me about 50 shots to get it right.

In looking through my photos from 2011, I realize how very much I've learned. I spent the entire summer practising macro shots; learned the difference between high and low key photos; discovered the setting dials on my camera; and learned that editing software is my friend, if I take the time to use it and practise.

It's been a wonderful year, expanding my knowledge of photography, and I am truly grateful to my NVP friends for helping me. A special thanks to Ben for organizing the group and giving us a home on Newsvine!

They are all wonderful rich and vibrant images. Composition is strong, colors are pure and eye catching and subject matter is really interesting.

I do see a growth and expansion of your imagery etva. I see the eye of an artist looking closer at the world around her.

Great work!!!!!

God, you really worked at these and you captured such great moments! I zoomed in on them just to look at how great they were. The Chicory with the bee looks like it has beads sewn on it! The picture of the turkey vulture with the plane & jet streams are awesome, loved your timing! I never thought about getting lights in a christmas tree to sparkle or how one does it, until you wrote about it. Have played a lot with a lot of different cameras (mostly film) that were just regular cameras, but everyone I have used I found something I liked about that particular camera! What is your favorite thing that you can do with this camera?

Thanks for the lovely comment, Anonymous! Until I joined NVP, I was strictly a point and shoot kind of girl, but this group taught me how much potential I was missing.

We meet weekly for a virtual meeting, and several of our members walked me through my camera settings, and helped me figure out what they were for, and how they changed the image results, from what is standard via auto. I discovered the little flower setting was for macros, and worked on that all summer!

Many years ago, my Dad took a picture of our Christmas tree, which I loved. The lights were shimmery, but the room was still in focus. He was using film of course, with manual settings, but I finally discovered a setting on my camera that allowed for the same effect (though I still can't see the picture on the dial well enough to tell you what it is - LOL:)

As for my favorite thing about my camera? [etva looks around to make sure no one from the group is paying attention] I mostly like that it's digital, and I can take hundreds of shots and see them almost immediately on my computer! LOL! I know I should offer something more technical or creative, but that's my honest answer! *grins*

Etva, Happy New Year!

PS sometimes it's just the simple things that we love! :)

I agree about that, I just love getting the shot, it is not always about putting it out there it is more about did I get what I wanted, or how can I look at this everyday object and make it interesting! Sometimes some of the most mundane things, turn out to be phenomenal when you play around with trying to see it differently!

PS I still have yet to post any photos here, I am still down after loosing a few memory cards that had thousands of photos. I enjoy stopping and seeing everyone's and how great everyone is. Such imagination! I really love these articles that everyone is picking for their favorites of the year!

Very true. If you haven't already discovered her photos, be sure to check out HollyKl's column. She's has an eye for abstracts and ordinary images, that become something unique and fascinating when she's done with them.

I still have yet to post any photos here, I am still down after loosing a few memory cards that had thousands of photos.

Many of us in this group have only just started taking photos again, for one reason or another. After my father died, I couldn't find the inspiration to write or photograph, but the photographers in this group encouraged me, and before I knew it, I was posting weekly.

So my message is, just shoot and post. It doesn't matter what your subject or style is; it seems that we can be fascinated by anything.

One of Ben's most amazing pictures is a coke can sitting on a wall. Some of our members were struggling to get head shots of birds, so they posted the tail feathers, and before we knew it, everyone in the group was posting tail shots (or moon shots as we call them.) I think my most successful article was a grainy picture of a lizard tail - LOL:)

At any rate, I hope you do post some photos. Everyone brings something interesting and unique to their articles, and it helps inspire the rest of us:)

Thanks Master Link. For me at least, this challenge was more of a year end essay, to show what I'd learned. I was a point and shoot kind of photographer at the beginning of the year, but I spent time on these photos, either looking for a way to capture an image already in my head, or trying to use editing techniques I'd learned in our virtual meetings. Digital editing was a completely new concept for me.

Thanks TVOR! I'm glad you liked that one. Not everyone prefers contrast as much as I do - LOL:)

As I recall, I bumped the contrast to full, dropped the shadows to a very low amount, then desaturated the color slightly and lowered the amount of highlights.

This was the first year our Spirea bloomed, and I was fascinated with the delicacy and glowing appearance of the blooms, but could never capture it in the initial image. The black background helped to emphasize the glow effect from the delicate powder blue color.

If you look at the blooms on number 9 (also Blue Mist Spirea) you can see the difference a black background makes to the overall image.

Sorry for being slow in getting here . . . wow, 7, 5, and 4 are my favorites. Seven has texture, life, wonderful color, and yet fantastic contrasts. Five takes me into a late evening, very cool evening, right after a light rain, love the mood it places me in. And number 4, holly cow. Bet you don't know what I watched on a DVD last night? Since I always enjoy a good old science fiction flic, I watched "The Giant Gila Monster." It's a fun movie, loads of fantastic black and white (well the whole movie is b/w), but fantastic study of contrast. When I first took photography one of my most favorite instructor stated that in every b/w photo there needs to be two important things, something completely black and something completely white. Almost all of my first projects were rejected due to having overwhelming gray matter and not enough of those two most important things! My problem is that I like all your photos. After going through the pictures again I want to add number 11 as one of my favorites from this group, it has soom fantastic contrest, the gray cloud puts one in a mood quickly, nicely done.
