Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs are insects native to Asia.  They were first documented in Pennsylvania in 1998 and most likely arrived via shipping crates.

They've been creating agricultural havoc in my area of Virginia for several years, affecting fruit and corn crops.  They are also a household pest, nearly impossible to vanquish.

It's been suggested that their populations have increased in this area due to recent warming trends.  Our unusually warm winters and early springs have enabled this pest to live longer and produce multiple generations in a single growing cycle.

Though these photos were taken inside our home, stink bugs have been visible on outside plants all winter.

For more information on these insects, please visit the following links:

LOL! Thanks Anna! I was snapping photos of the poinsettia for the Abstract Challenge, and only later noticed the stink bug, so then I focused on him. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to get the secretion photo. I always wondered how they did it - LOL.

It's an NVP mooning with extra pop!

You probably saw this, but here's a cropped photo I did for Flickr that shows the jeweled look of the stink bugs. Maybe we can start a new jewelry fad - stink bug pins -- kind of like scarab broaches or stick pins:)

Thanks Lebowsky! It's amazing how annoying these things can be. In the fall, they swarm houses -- seriously!! My mother is scared to death of them, but it's nearly impossible to get rid of them, especially for those who live in old houses. It's just not possible to close off all the cracks and potential entrances.

Thank you Peace Blessing! I agree, that I'm not a fan of stink bugs. This one flew in under my radar because the scent of our dog (who had earlier battled a skunk) was more overpowering than that of the stink bug. Still, I got him in the end! LOL:)

Yikes! Now that is strange, what with y'all being so far north. We had a hornets nest near our house, and they lived much longer than normal. It was well into December before they started dying. I haven't done any research into how the warmth will affect their habits, but I know there's been concerns that bees are missing the pollen of certain flowers that are blooming early. Maybe the bees and hornets are adapting. Something else to look into, I suppose.

Yuck. Another reason not to move east.

Stink bugs are a real agricultural pest, sucking the plant juices of soybean, lima bean and corn plants. They damage fruit and leaves.

Regarding predators, Wiki says:

In China, Trissolcus halyomorphae, a parasitoid species in the family Scelionidae, is a primary predator.[19] This species is not currently present in the U.S., but is undergoing study for possible introduction by 2013.[4] Several other species of the parasitoid wasp have been documented attacking stink bug eggs in a Virginia soybean field.[20] Some species of spiders and praying mantises will attack adult stink bugs.[citation needed]

We're not likely to bring a pet praying mantis or spider to our homes, hey? Pet tarantula, anyone?

I've not seen anything attack stink bugs, other than my cat. In fact, they happily shared a tree with hornets. But I'll confess, I'm not excactly excited about introducting another non-native species. Murphy has such great control of those pesky unintended consequences.

These things remind me of some ants we have around here They are called Pissants, and when riled up they actually can turn and aim their abdomens and squirt their juice at their enemy. Smells very bad when one manages to score a hit on you.

etva, these are what we call stink beetles in the desert of NM. They can squirt quite a distance. A dog will only get into a fight with one once. They spray the dog right in the nose or eye. If you leave them alone they won't bother you.

The tax season is always a zoo, you know how hard it can be to get what you need from people. They don't think it's that important until the extension costs and fines set in.

I don't know if we've been blessed or cursed with this nice weather, 60's and 70's. I feel we'll see the curse soon, lol. April is always the worst for me personally, but I get up trying everyday to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
